Well the author is using this fact because the author is showing us that smoking is bad. How? Well there a sign said smoking kill people and the text. The author is using statistics too. The author  is showing that most people started smoking at a young age and most of them are most likely to die. The author is telling us that we should stop smoking because it cause too many deaths.
